A vision of LinkedIn as a place that “makes the business world smarter” lured MediaNext keynoter Dan Roth from a successful career in traditional media to lead the editorial operations at the social network for business professionals.Informing business professionals had always been top of mind for Roth, who spent many years as a writer for Fortune and Wired, and who eventually led Fortune’s digital offerings. However, the opportunity to directly reach the vast network of digital professionals that LinkedIn serves by building up its information-sharing infrastructure was too appealing to resist. But why, as Roth’s keynote topic at FOLIO:’s MediaNext conference in New York posited, does LinkedIn actually need an executive editor? While LinkedIn “used to be focused on connecting people,” he says “now it is as much about connecting people with ideas.” That connection of people and ideas is something Roth believes all modern media companies should be focused on. “The role of the media is being a conversation starter,” he says. “A great headline, a great quote-these are great reasons to reach out to someone.”While he says there are certainly people reading to educate themselves on a subject and to “get smarter” the vast majority of readers leverage media as a means to put forth a view, interests, and opinions to their network to generate interaction and help develop their social and professional connections and standing (and, he points out, they used to do so by clipping and sharing newspaper articles, so this isn’t something that is entirely new to the social media era).Roth provided specific guidance for publishers seeking to increase their visibility in LinkedIn’s curated content sections on its homepage and at LinkedIn Today–which Roth says can “drive enough traffic to crash your servers”–such as including that all important “share” button at the top and bottom of every page and being sure to share their own articles on LinkedIn (the more it is shared, the more LinkedIn’s algorithms view it as “important to the business community). He also provided some broader insights based on his experience in new and old media, as well as his own media consumption (and sharing) habits. He suggests that every article include pictures, as they are a consistent driver of traffic. He also says that snappy, opinionated headlines lend themselves to social proliferation.Above all, sites must provide an opportunity for reader feedback, engagement, and conversation. “I can’t stand reading sites where there aren’t comments,” says Roth who points to the incredible quantity and quality of comments on the LinkedIn Influencers pages, but also to those on sites he really enjoys, such as Mashable where almost all of the articles end with the line “What do you think?””When I get to the end of an article, no matter how brilliantly written,” Roth says, “if there are no comments, [it] feels unfinished to me. I want to hear someone add something that carries the conversation forward or says why it is wrong.” And he is not alone. Roth points out that “despite a lot of people expressing concern about people consuming media, we can see that people love the news. They are reading at a furious rate, but occasionally,” he says, “I hear about a media company that has issues with sharing and social media. We’re all struggling to make money, but you need to make sure your readers have a voice.” read more
Australia prime minister Scott Morrison. Each year in Tampa Florida, Imaginarium holds one of the coolest comic conventions to be had on the east side. Tampa Bay Comic Con brings in thousands of attendees, and the unique show continues to grow with each passing year. Where most comic conventions these days push their artists and creators to a back wall, making room for gigantic t-shirt booths or media props and cutouts; Tampa Bay Comic Con gives the golden age; as well as the rising comic creators the respect they deserve. Artists are not just lined up in one sad row in the back. They are cascaded throughout the show floor ready to interact with their fans, and it is truly a beautiful thing that I feel is missing at a lot of newer shows today.Speaking of gorgeous things, TBCC also brings in some of the most creative and talented cosplayers I’ve seen at a show in a while. Cosplay guest Jessica Nigri was on hand this year showing off her new Fem-Reinhardt outfit from Overwatch that had fans going crazy! With talent like this at TBCC, fans made sure to bring their A-game. Each year the cosplay has improved, and I’ve noticed that more families have been getting involved in the fun. I even saw a few pets walking around dressed up that made the dog lover in me scream for joy. AOT Group chief executive Andrew Burnes said the fact that Australia does not have a federal minister managing the tourism portfolio was “extremely disappointing”. Ex-federal tourism minister Fran Bailey believes tourism requires its own minister. “On one hand I can understand the government is thinking that it has elevated tourism into the trade portfolio,” Ms Bailey said. Source = ETB News: P.T. The AU$98 billion national industry, considered one of Australia’s key economic growth sectors, currently falls under the supervision of the trade and investment portfolio, The Australian reported. The Australian government is facing criticism from an ex-party member and industry executives, over its decision not to appoint a dedicated tourism minister. “(But) the reason I think it needs its own senior dedicated minister is because it’s an industry that spans so many areas across the whole of government.” “For an industry that employs 700,000 Australians and is sustainable and does not rely on handouts, and is economically viable, the commonwealth needs to rethink its position,” Mr Burnes said. read more
Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, Stevie Nicks are among those who will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame next year Stevie Nicks of the band Fleetwood Mac performs at the 2018 iHeartRadio Music Festival Day 1 held at T-Mobile Arena on Friday, Sept. 21, 2018, in Las Vegas. Nicks will join Def Leppard, Janet Jackson, Radiohead, the Cure, Roxy Music and the Zombies as new members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The 34th induction ceremony will take place on March 29 at Barclays Center in New York. (Photo by John Salangsang/Invision/AP) NEW YORK — Janet Jackson joins her brother Michael and the Jackson 5 as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, earning induction on Thursday along with Stevie Nicks and the top fan vote-getter, Def Leppard.Radiohead, the Cure, Roxy Music and the Zombies will also be ushered in next spring at the 34th induction ceremony. It will be held March 29 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.Jackson’s induction comes after her third time as nominee and many saw it as overdue, given her prowess as a hitmaker with “All For You,” ”That’s the Way Love Goes,” ”Nasty,” ”Together Again” and “What Have You Done For Me Lately.”Her career has suffered from the fallout after the infamous 2004 Super Bowl appearance where her bare breast was briefly exposed. Jackson became eligible for the rock hall in 2007 and wasn’t nominated until 2016.The Roots’ Questlove, in a social media post earlier this year, said her exclusion had been “highly criminal.” He cited the influence of her 1986 album “Control,” which he said set off the New Jack Swing trend.“This was no one’s kid sister,” he wrote. It will be Nicks’ second induction into the rock hall, since she’s already there as a member of Fleetwood Mac. She launched a solo career in 1981 with her duet with the late Tom Petty, “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around.” Other hits followed, including “Edge of Seventeen,” ”Stand Back” and “I Will Run to You.”Def Leppard earned more than half a million votes from fans, which are incorporated into more than 1,000 ballots from artists, historians, industry professionals and past winners in deciding who gets honoured. The British heavy metal band with a pop sheen were huge sellers in the 1980s on the back of songs like “Photograph” and “Pour Some Sugar on Me.”Frontman Joe Elliott said he was initially ambivalent toward the honour until Jon Bon Jovi suggested it would change his life.“When I look at the list of who’s in, it’s just obvious you’d want to be in that club, isn’t it?” he told Billboard earlier this year. “When you think that every band that means anything in the world, starting from the Beatles and the Stones and any artist that influenced them — your Chuck Berrys, your Little Richards, etc., etc. — then of course you want to be in. Why wouldn’t you?”Def Leppard, Nicks and Roxy Music were voted in during their first years as nominees. Other 2019 nominees who didn’t make the cut included LL Cool J, Devo, Rage Against the Machine, MC5, John Prine, Todd Rundgren and Kraftwerk. There’s some question about whether Radiohead will shrug its collective shoulder as a nominee. The English band seemed like generic grunge rockers on their initial hit “Creep,” but with the album “OK Computer” and beyond have become consistent sonic pioneers. Among its rock hall class, Radiohead has the most impact on the current music scene. In an interview with Rolling Stone earlier this year, Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood said “I don’t care” when asked about the rock hall. Bandmate Ed O’Brien said, “culturally, I don’t understand it. I think it might be a quintessentially American thing.”The Cure and frontman Robert Smith resist their initial label as goth rockers, champions of fans who like black makeup, black clothes and darkly romantic songs. They have a durable catalogue of hits, including “Friday I’m in Love,” ”Boys Don’t Cry,” ”Pictures of You” and “Let’s Go to Bed.”Roxy Music came out of the 1970s progressive rock scene and had hits with “Love is the Drug” and “More Than This.” Dapper member Bryan Ferry had a successful solo career and Brian Eno has been an influential producer. The heyday of British rockers the Zombies’ career was the 1960s, with big sellers “She’s Not There” and “Time of the Season.”The hall will announce ticket sales for March’s ceremony next month. HBO and SiriusXM will carry the event.___Online: https://www.rockhall.comDavid Bauder, The Associated Press Summary Janet Jackson, Def Leppard, Nicks join Rock Hall of Fame by David Bauder, The Associated Press Posted Dec 13, 2018 5:07 am PDT Last Updated Dec 13, 2018 at 7:54 am PDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email Def Leppard|induction|Janet Jackson|music|Rock Hall of Fame|stevie nicks read more
