Jordan UN agency pledges 11 million to boost health services for Iraqi

Aiming to improve medical services and facilities for the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees living in Jordan, the United Nations refugee agency today pledged $11 million to help the country care for them.Under a funding agreement signed in Amman today, the money will help the Ministry of Health enhance public medical services and primary health centres, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said in a news release.“For a long time there was not enough attention given to the burden on Jordan and we continue to try to help in alleviating this burden,” UNHCR Representative in Jordan Imran Riza said after signing the agreement.“In the health sector this will mean increased capacity and improved services to help Jordan and our Iraqi brethren,” said Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Suhair Al-Ali, who signed the accord on behalf of the Jordanian Government. The grant comes as part of UNHCR’s commitment to help neighbouring countries, especially Jordan and Syria, cope with an influx of more than 2.2 million Iraqis, who have fled the conflict in their country. The agency’s assistance in these countries is focusing on education, health, food, social and legal counselling, and shelter. The health grant follows an earlier agreement under which UNHCR agreed to provide some $10 million to strengthen the capacity of Jordan’s public schools. Tens of thousands of Iraqis were allowed to enroll in public schools at the start of the academic year last September. 20 November 2007Aiming to improve medical services and facilities for the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi refugees living in Jordan, the United Nations refugee agency today pledged $11 million to help the country care for them. read more

Clinton and Papandreou meet on Berlin sidelines

first_imgPrime Minister George Papandreou detailed his government’s initiatives in a series of foreign policy issues during an informal meeting in Berlin with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Monday, on the sidelines of celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The meeting was held at the initiative of the Greek side to better present Athens’ positions. Papandreou referred both to his recent trip to Istanbul and his meeting with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well as to Greece’s initiative on the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM), stressing that “Greece is playing a leading role in the Balkans again and desires to contribute decisively to (the region’s) EU accession course.” The Greek prime minister made it absolutely clear that a precondition for FYROM accession course is the solving of the neighbouring country’s name, in accordance with “national red lines” that has been set on the part of Greece, meaning a composite name with a geographical qualifier for all uses without exception. Papandreou also pointed to his initiative for an informal acquaintance meeting with Skopje’s Gruevski, which took place in Brussels recently. The Greek prime minister further briefed Clinton on his recent trip to Cyprus, his talks with Cyprus President Demetris Christofias and the island’s other political forces and underlined that “we must let the two communities discuss their future openly and freely, under the umbrella of the EU.” Papandreou pointed out that whatever agreement is reached must fully respect the acquis communautaire to enable it to be a workable European solution. On the occasion of Clinton’s recent meeting with the Ecumenical Patriarch, the prime minister also focused on the issues of the Patriarchate. On her part, Clinton agreed that the new Greek government is a government that takes initiatives. Facebook Twitter: @NeosKosmos Instagramlast_img read more

Elon Musks SpaceBound Roadster Will Crash Into Earth One Day

first_imgStay on target Elon Musk’s cherry red Tesla Roadster is on a collision course for Earth—eventually.Shot into the cosmos last week aboard SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket, the scarlet sports car will likely crash into our planet (or, if we’re lucky, Venus).“But there’s no need to panic,” researcher Hanno Rein said in a statement. “The probability of that happening even within the next million years is very small.”Part test flight payload, part publicity stunt, Musk’s personal vehicle is now classified as a near-earth object, meaning it’s cataloged and tracked by NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, along with asteroids, meteoroids, comets, and defunct space probes. The car is currently traveling on an elliptical path, repeatedly moving beyond Mars then back to Earth’s orbital distance from the sun.But what interested Rein, an assistant professor of physics at the University of Toronto Scarborough, was not the immediate effects of sending a sports car into orbit. He wanted to study its long-term fate.According to a detailed news release, the car’s orbit evolves over time depending on its encounters with Earth—particularly how close it comes to the planet. Any small change in its trajectory could greatly affect its orbit.“Each time it passes Earth, the car will get a gravitational kick,” Dan Tamayo, a postdoctoral fellow at UT Scarborough, explained. “The Tesla can be kicked onto a wider or small orbit, so it’s random.”After running a series of simulations, the researchers determined the probability of the Roadster smashing into Earth and Venus over the next one million years to be 6 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively.“Although we are not able to tell on which planet the car will ultimately end up, we’re comfortable saying it won’t survive in space for more than a few tens of millions of years,” Rein said.(Don’t worry: Even if it accelerates toward Earth at a speed of zero-to-60-mph in 1.9 seconds, most (if not all) of the vehicle will burn up in the atmosphere first.)Our first close encounter with the Tesla will be in 2091, when it is expected to pass within a few hundred thousand kilometers of Earth. Researchers get mixed results in training dogs to sniff out lung cancer

first_img Dogs have made headlines over the past several years as some have alerted their owners to health problems that have sometimes turned out to be cancer—in some cases, actually saving their lives. Scientists believe dogs are able to smell some types of cancer by detecting chemicals expelled in the breath. In this new effort, the researchers sought to learn whether dogs might serve as a suitable tool for use in detecting lung cancer in people. The experiment consisted of training six dogs of various breeds (which had all been trained in other sniffing skills such as finding people covered by snow in an avalanche) over the course of six months to respond to chemicals in the breath of human cancer patients. The dogs were then tested on their skills by exposing them to the breath of 122 human volunteers—29 of whom were lung cancer patients at various stages of treatment. The researchers report mixed results—the dogs reported smelling cancer 78.6 percent of the time in the cancer patients, which was good, of course. But they also reported not smelling cancer in the breath of the cancer-free volunteers only 34.4 percent of the time. The study was conducted in a double-blind manner to eliminate bias, but doing so might have introduced errors by the dogs, the team reports, because it added extra stress. Dogs, they note, are also prone to distraction from a number of causes (boredom, fatigue hunger, etc.) which can also lead to errors. They believed that changing certain aspects of the testing environment might lead to a better outcome. Meanwhile, other researchers believe a better solution would be to create an artificial nose that is as sensitive as that of a dog to overcome the problem of using live animals. (Phys.org)—A team of researchers at Krems University Hospital in Vienna Austria has found mixed results while conducting studies to determine the viability of using dogs to detect lung cancer in human beings. In their paper published in the Journal of Breath Research, the team describes their study and results and suggest ways of improving the performance of dogs used for such a purpose. Journal information: Journal of Breath Research Dogs can sniff out lung cancer, pilot study shows More information: Klaus Hackner et al. Canine scent detection for the diagnosis of lung cancer in a screening-like situation, Journal of Breath Research (2016). DOI: 10.1088/1752-7155/10/4/046003AbstractThe prognosis in lung cancer depends largely on early stage detection, and thus new screening methods are attracting increasing attention. Canine scent detection has shown promising results in lung cancer detection, but there has only been one previous study that reproduces a screening-like situation. Here breath samples were collected from 122 patients at risk for lung cancer (smokers and ex-smokers); 29 of the subjects had confirmed diagnosis of lung cancer but had not yet been treated and 93 subjects had no signs or symptoms of lung cancer at the time of inclusion. The breath samples were presented to a trained sniffer dog squadron in a double-blind manner. A rigid scientific protocol was used with respect to earlier canine scent detection studies, with one difference: instead of offering one in five positive samples to the dogs, we offered a random number of positive samples (zero to five). The final positive and negative predictive values of 30.9% and 84.0%, respectively, were rather low compared to other studies. The results differed from those of previous studies, indicating that canine scent detection might not be as powerful as is looked for in real screening situations. One main reason for the rather poor performance in our setting might be the higher stress from the lack of positive responses for dogs and handlers. IOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 Free review

first_imgIOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 Free review by Martin Brinkmann on October 27, 2016 in Software – 16 commentsIOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 Free is the latest iteration of the all-in-on cleanup and optimization suite for Windows devices. While the new version does not ship with many new features, there is only FaceID and it has limited uses, most of the tools that the suite ships with have been improved. As far as FaceID is concerned, it is added to Advanced SystemCare’s ever growing list of protection tools. FaceID requires a web cam that is connected to the PC. Once set up, it will monitor the PC for unauthorized use using facial recognition technology.Basically, what it does is capture the photo of any unauthorized user (anyone but you) so that you see who tried to access your PC in your absence. The feature may or may not be useful depending on how you are using the PC.IOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 FreeThe installation of Advanced SystemCare 10 Free does not hold any surprises. You may select custom install to change the installation directory and block the creation of a desktop shortcut, but that is about it. No unwanted third-party programs or anything like that; good. The program does add itself as an auto-starting service, and to the system start however. You will also notice a series of connection attempts to IOBit servers which you can block without losing program functionality it seems.IOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 Free divides its tools into the following groups: speed up, protect, clean & optimize, toolbox and action center.Speed Up: Tools in this group list a number of tweaks that you may apply to your system. There is a Turbo Boost feature that releases RAM by stopping unnecessary apps or services, an option to remove toolbars and malicious apps or plugins, and an option to scan for outdated drivers.Protect: Only the Homepage protection is enabled by default. This monitors system browsers for unwanted changes to the homepage or search engine. Other options include the previously mentioned FaceID protection, browsing and ads removal, and an option called reinforce for Windows 10. The latter offers a collection of tweaks to block telemetry data and disable certain features such as administrative shares or remote assistance services.Clean & Optimize: This looks like a temporary file cleaner on first glance, but it is more than that. It runs a variety of checks that include scans for junk files but also for startup items, Registry issues and more. This is not as comprehensive as specialized tools like CCleaner, but it covers a lot of ground.Toolbox: This is an assortment of various tools, of which some need to be downloaded before they can be used. Tools include the usual, a file shredder and undelete tool for instance, or a Registry defragmenter. These tools are not needed all the time — some not at all as they are mostly snake oil –, but others may come in handy at times. Some items are marked as Pro which means that they cannot be used by users of the free version.Closing WordsIOBit Advanced SystemCare 10 Free ships with a massive list of tools and features. Some can be extremely useful, others on the other hand can best be described as snake oil. This does not make it a bad program or program suite, but it may be time to look hard at the features that the suite offers and maybe remove those that are proven not to be beneficial to the system.Tools like Turbo Boost, Smart RAM, Registry Cleaner or Internet Boost need to be mentioned in this regard.Advanced SystemCare 10 Free is a well designed program on the other hand that some users will find useful.Summary12345 Author Rating2.5 based on 25 votes Software Name Advanced SystemCare 10 FreeOperating System WindowsSoftware Category AdministrationLanding Page http://www.iobit.com/en/advancedsystemcarefree.php Advertisementlast_img read more
