New Delhi: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced a list of 22 match officials for the league stages of the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 which will begin on May 30 with England taking on South Africa at The Oval. The umpires and officials announced for the tournament are Chris Broad, Jeff Crowe, Andy Pycroft, Ranjan Madugalle, Richie Richardson (all match referees); Aleem Dar, Marais Erasmus, Chris Gaffaney, Ian Gould, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Nigel Llong, Ruchira Palliyaguruge, Rod Tucker, Michael Gough, Paul Wilson. However, the addition of Indian umpire S Ravi is rather surprising.Recently, in the IPL 2019 clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians at the M Chinnaswamy stadium, there was controversy regarding the umpiring standards. S Ravi, who was the umpire at that time, failed to spot a no-ball in the last ball bowled by Lasith Malinga and Royal Challengers Bangalore lost by six runs. When the replays were shown on the big screen, Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper Virat Kohli was furious. “We are playing at the IPL level. It’s not club level, the umpires should have their eyes open. That was a big no-ball,” a livid Kohli said at the post-match presentation ceremony. Incidentally, Ravi is the only Indian umpire in ICC’s Elite Panel for a number of years now as none of the others has been good enough to be elevated,” Kohli said. Former Hearts of Oak defender Dan Quaye has attributed the recent struggles of his former club and their rivals Asante Kotoko especially in the area of winning titles to the lack of veteran leadership available.Hearts of Oak specifically have failed to win a major trophy in the last decade and were struggling in the league prior to the annulment of the football season.Quaye who won multiple domestic and continental titles with the Phobians says his for club has veered away from all the things that made them a dominant force some years back.Hearts of oak and Kotoko have to find experienced players, they need to blend the youth and senior players. If you take Bayern Munich and Juventus for instance, they have a lot of experienced players, not to say the young ones are not pulling their weight. However, they need some guidance or leadership on the field, because it is difficult controlling people who are of the same age in the team, but if there is a senior player in the team, he will command some respect.” he revealed to Citi Sports read more

For the first time in almost two years, Ghana’s capital will host a competitive Black Stars match.Joy Sports sources at the sports ministry say the Afcon 2017 qualifier against Mauritius will be played at the Accra Sports Stadium. To this end, the ministry is racing against time to fix all outstanding problems in the stadium. This revelation comes on the back of Tuesday’s Ghana FA Executive Committee meeting to conclude on a programme for the Black Stars. The game will be played on Sunday, June 14 as the Black Stars, who are in Group H with Rwanda and Mozambique as well – begin their journey to Gabon. Other details of the program include a June 1 deadline for Avram Grant to invite the players he will need for the game so preps can begin. Grant has almost completed the squad list and it should be out by the end of next week. Before the qualifier, Joy Sports understands that the Stars will play Togo in a warm-up friendly in Accra on June 6.The last time the Stars played a qualifier in Accra was on September 8, 2012 when they beat Malawi 2-0 en route to qualifying for the 2013 Afcon. The capital city has historically not been a good grounds for the Black Stars, with Kumasi having pride of place due to a seeming better atmosphere it offers the team. But in the last year, the Garden City has also had a tetchy relationship with the Black Stars in the run to qualify for the last Afcon leading to the GFA’s decision to opt for Tamale. It is not clear when the team will revert to the Baba Yara Sports Stadium. –Follow Gary on Twitter: @garyalsmith read more
